Studying nerve transfers: Searching for a consensus in nerve axons count
2021
Axonal count is the base for efficient nerve transfer; despite its capital importance, few studies have been published on human material, most research approaches being performed on experimental animal models of nerve injury. Thus, standard analysis methods are still lacking. Quantitative data obtained have to be reproducible and comparable with published data by other research groups. To share results with the scientific community, the standardization of quantitative analysis is a fundamental step. For this purpose, the experiences of the Italian, Austrian, German, Greek, and Iberian-Latin American groups have been compared with each other and with the existing literature to reach a consen…
HUMAN T-LYMPHOTROPIC VIRUS 1 (HTLV-1) AND HUMAN T-LYMPHOTROPIC VIRUS 2 (HTLV-2): GEOGRAPHICAL RESEARCH TRENDS AND COLLABORATION NETWORKS (1989-2012)
2016
Publications are often used as a measure of research work success. Human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) type 1 and 2 are human retroviruses, which were discovered in the early 1980s, and it is estimated that 15-20 million people are infected worldwide. This article describes a bibliometric review and a coauthorship network analysis of literature on HTLV indexed in PubMed in a 24-year period. A total of 7,564 documents were retrieved, showing a decrease in the number of documents from 1996 to 2007. HTLV manuscripts were published in 1,074 journals. Japan and USA were the countries with the highest contribution in this field (61%) followed by France (8%). Production ranking changed when the numb…
3D-Printed Products for Topical Skin Applications: From Personalized Dressings to Drug Delivery.
2021
3D printing has been widely used for the personalization of therapies and on-demand production of complex pharmaceutical forms. Recently, 3D printing has been explored as a tool for the development of topical dosage forms and wound dressings. Thus, this review aims to present advances related to the use of 3D printing for the development of pharmaceutical and biomedical products for topical skin applications, covering plain dressing and products for the delivery of active ingredients to the skin. Based on the data acquired, the important growth in the number of publications over the last years confirms its interest. The semisolid extrusion technique has been the most reported one, probably …
Present status and first results of the final focus beam line at the KEK Accelerator Test Facility
2011
ATF2 is a final-focus test beam line which aims to focus the low emittance beam from the ATF damping ring to a vertical size of about 37 nm and to demonstrate nanometer level beam stability. Several advanced beam diagnostics and feedback tools are used. In December 2008, construction and installation were completed and beam commissioning started, supported by an international team of Asian, European, and U.S. scientists. The present status and first results are described.
Genetic control of immune response in carriers of ancestral haplotype 8.1: the study of chemotaxis.
2007
In all caucasian populations the association of an impressive number of autoimmune diseases with genes from the HLA-B8, DR3 hap- lotype that is part of the ancestral haplotype (AH) 8.1 HLA-A1, Cw7, B8, TNFAB∗a2b3, TNFN∗S, C2∗C, Bf∗s, C4A∗Q0, C4B∗1, DRB1∗0301, DRB3∗0101, DQA1∗0501, DQB1∗0201 has been reported by different research groups. This haplotype, which is more common in northern Europe, is also associated with a number of immune system dysfunctions in healthy subjects. Analyzing the data according to gender, some dysfunc- tions are observed in women but not in men, in agreement with the role of X-linked genes and/or estrogens in the development and progression of autoimmune diseases.…
Quantitative Vibrational Spectrometry in the 21st Century: A Scientometric Evaluation
2005
Abstract The state of the art of research on vibrational spectrometry–based quantitative methodologies was evaluated from the literature compiled in Analytical Abstracts from 1980. Medium and near infrared, Raman spectrometry, and photoacoustic methods of analysis were considered. The evolution of the number of published papers, the distribution of the literature as a function of the different application fields in which the vibrational methods were employed, and a study of the impact on this area of chemometric and automation studies clearly shows that, from the 1990s until now, the importance of vibrational spectrometry in application analysis has grown to reach maturity. This field provi…
Oxygenation of Cervix Cancers: Impact of Clinical and Pathological Parameters
2003
Current knowledge on the oxygenation status of carcinomas of the uterine cervix is mostly based on pretherapeutic data obtained in pre-and postmenopausal women. Mean and median 02 tensions (pO2) obtained from >20,000 p02-measurements in more than 400 squamous cell carcinomas of the uterine cervix observed by several research groups were, on average, distinctly lower than in normal tissues. Oxygen tensions measured in the normal cervix of nullipara patients revealed a median pO2 of 42 mmHg, whereas in conscious patients with locally advanced cancers of the cervix (stage FIGO lb-IVa), the median pO2 values were 10-20 mmHg. In patients under general propofol-anesthesia the median p02 values we…
Recent progress on the characterization of the high-pressure behaviour of AVO4 orthovanadates
2018
AVO4 vanadates are materials of technological importance due to their variety of functional properties. They have applications as scintillators, thermophosphors, photocatalysts, cathodoluminescence, and laser-host materials. Studies at HP-HT are helpful for understanding the physical properties of the solid state, in special, the phase behavior of AVO4 materials. For instance, they have contributed to understand the macroscopic properties of vanadates in terms of microscopic mechanisms. A great progress has been made in the last decade towards the study of the pressure-effects on the structural, vibrational, and electronic properties of AVO4 compounds. Thanks to the combination of experimen…
Vitrification of human mature oocytes in clinical practice.
2009
Oocyte cryopreservation has long been the focus of unsuccessful efforts to perfect its clinical application. Lately, vitrification has been shown to provide high degrees of success by different research groups. This review attempts to address the efficiency of oocyte vitrification in clinical practice through an analysis of reports of IVF cycles in which embryo transfers have been conducted with vitrified metaphase-II human oocytes.
